...of Becoming an Artist

When I first began creating and showing my felted artwork, I thought the biggest reward would be the joy of making art itself—the colors, the textures, the freedom to express what’s in my heart. But what I’ve discovered along the way is something I never anticipated: the incredible people this path has brought into my life.
Becoming an artist has opened doors to a world filled with connection, generosity, and shared passion. From exhibition curators who’ve taken a genuine interest in my work, to gallery owners and framers who treat each piece with care, to photographers who capture the spirit of my creations—each has added their own touch to my journey.

What humbles me most is how many people have helped me move mountains to meet deadlines—all for the sake of art. From last-minute framing rescues to out-of-the-norm deliveries, helping hands always seem to appear right when I need them. Their belief in what I’m creating keeps me pushing forward, even when the to-do list feels impossible.
And then there are the fellow artists—my creative kindred spirits. We swap stories about late-night inspiration, laugh about the chaos of art show setups, and cheer each other on through deadlines and self-doubt. There’s something deeply comforting about being part of a community that understands both the beauty and the vulnerability of putting your work into the world.

Art collectors, too, have become unexpected friends. Some discovered my work at markets or galleries and reached out just to share how a piece made them feel. Knowing that my art lives on their walls, becoming part of their stories, is a kind of connection I’ll never take for granted. The collectors of "Big Chief" are even staying with us when they come in town for the Three Rivers Art Festival in a couple of weeks.
This—these people, these relationships—is the true fortune of becoming an artist. The art world can be competitive and uncertain, but it’s also full of heart, collaboration, and kindness. Every encounter has reminded me that while I create from solitude, I’m never alone in this journey.
I wish I had photos of and could list the names of everyone that has touched my life and journey along the way. If you are reading this, you know who are - and I deeply treasure you and what you have added to my life!
